Handling Pet Emergencies

What to do in an emergency:

• Try to remain calm
Remaining calm will help you to better focus on what you need to do to get help for your pet. If you are calm, your pet may calm down as well.

• If possible, call Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center of Westbury at
516-420-0000 first to describe the nature of your pet's problem

Our staff will give you instructions on how to handle your pet while en route and give you directions to the hospital. They will also alert our medical staff of your pet's emergency and your expected time of arrival.

• Use absolute caution when handling and moving your pet
When injured and scared, even a loving pet may bite. If in doubt, gently place a towel or blanket over his or her head, making certain to provide good air circulation for breathing. This step will help settle your pet.
