  • Client Service Manager

    Clela Toms


    Clela has loved animals since she was a child. Growing up, her pets included Charlie, a Lab mix, an albino corn snake, she named Mr. Pinky, and Herm, a Russian tortoise.  To continue working with animals, Clela joined the local Petco in Morgantown, WV as a part-time associate. She acquired her Basset Hound puppy, Buddy, during that time, fostered many cats (including several nursing litters), and rescued Clyde, a stray yellow tabby. After receiving her BA in Communication Studies from West Virginia University, Clela returned home to Frederick, MD, and transferred to Petco in Leesburg, VA. She became the General Manager of the Leesburg Petco in 2014 and developed a successful, well-run business.

     Clela became interested in being more involved in the care of animals, and joined VCA VRA this spring, as the Communications Director. She is enjoying the challenge of working in a fast-paced, friendly environment where the focus is excellent service and quality animal care.

    In her free time, Clela’s interests include motorcycling, experiencing many of the healthy and exotic restaurants in the area, and enjoying time spent with her friends and family (both two and four legged).

  • Front Office Manager

    Jonathan Batuyong

    Jon joined VCA Veterinary Referral Associates in March 2012. He recently got promoted to front office manager. He was previously a receptionist and a referral coordinator. Jon lives in Germantown with his beautiful wife Erin, and their young son Michael. Jon enjoys the diversity of the patients and the fast-pace of our ER department. In his spare time, Jon enjoys baseball, video games, and has a slight addiction to all things Batman.

    Nancy Hauck

    Nancy is a Client Service Telephone Operator, who has been with Veterinary Referral Associates since Dec 7, 2010. In her free time, Nancy enjoys spending time with her family and also cooking. She has two wonderful dogs, “Charlie,” a five-year-old German Rottweiler and “D’Ablo,” a five-year-old Pit bull.

    Kristen Oliva

     Before coming to VCA Veterinary Referral Associates, Kristen worked as a technician at Quince Orchard Veterinary Hospital for almost ten years. Although she may still be called upon to help occasionally in our ER, Kristen’s primary job is in the VRA Billing Department. Her previous skills help her with accuracy because she is very aware of the veterinary services that are grouped together to treat many illnesses. Kristen has not deserted hands-on veterinary medicine and  is currently enrolled  at  Penn Foster College where she is studying to ultimately receive her Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology.  After she graduates, she plans on becoming a licensed Veterinary Technician.

    Kristen has a love for all animals, no matter what the species.  She has welcomed into her home: cats, dogs, chickens, chinchillas, hamsters, fish, hermit crabs, toads, frogs, and a tortoise. She spent many years rehabilitating and fostering homeless animals in conjunction with local non-profit animal rescue organizations. Her passion is to give animals in need, a fair chance to experience the warmth and caring a good home has to offer.

    Kristen shares her life with her husband, “soon to be” three children, a three legged dog named Kane, and a Russian Tortoise who is called Henrietta. She enjoys spending time with her family and experiencing  the enjoyment that comes along with witnessing  the wonderful world created by her little ones.

    Angela Wheeler
    School: Tuskegee University

    Angela is our hospital's Client Service phone operator. With over 10 years of service with VCA Veterinary Referral Associates, Angela is one of our hospital's original telephone operators. Her previous experience was with C&P Telephone Company, and Mercy and University Hospitals of Maryland (the human side of medicine). She is presently a caregiver to her mother-in-law. She says she feels that she brings a compassionate and understanding ear to all whom she's in contact with, and she is glad to help everyone as much as she can.

    Angela's hobbies include, music, cooking, poetry, theatre, racing cars, and shopping!!!

  • Receptionist

    Angelica Algeo

    Angelica, better known since she was a cub by her nickname Angel, has been with
    VCA VRA since September of 2012. After trying other shifts, she is currently scheduled as our overnight receptionist. This affords her the challenge of working alone and gives her the opportunity to meet new and interesting clients and pets who come in during the late night and early morning hours.

    Angel resides in North Potomac with her recently acquired Muppet-looking terrier
    mix P'nut (a.k.a. Creeper) and has hopes to soon add a Rottweiler/Pit Bull combo
    named Backup to her home.

    Angel plans to return to school in the near future to study video editing, with the
    intention of one day creating trailers for the Hollywood movie industry. Angel's
    hobbies include reading, making TV/movie-based music videos, adding to her
    extensive television/movie collection and researching any/all information available
    concerning Michelle Rodriguez and Joss Whedon.

  • Receptionist

    Barbara Dodge

    Barbara is a Receptionist Supervisor who has been a member of our Veterinary Referral Associates’ team since November 2011. She is a native of Montgomery County and graduated from Richard Montgomery High School. She went on to obtain a B.S. degree in Vertebrate Biology from Averett College in Danville, VA. Upon graduation from college, she moved back to Rockville and had various animal-related jobs, including horse farm manager and professional pet sitter until she found her way to Gaithersburg Animal Hospital, where she worked for 11 years. Seeking an opportunity to advance her career in a more diverse environment, she joined our staff at VRA in 2011.

    Barbara makes her home currently in Washington County, MD. She is the proud owner of three German shepherd dogs, and a small herd of cats. She is an active volunteer with Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, and has fostered over 185 dogs in the last twelve years.

  • Receptionist

    Elizabeth Miller

    Bess is a Receptionist, who has been with VCA Veterinary Referral Associates since May 22, 2007. She enjoys getting to know the clients and their pets, especially ones that come in routinely for treatment.

    In her free time, Bess enjoys spending time with her crazy/affectionate cats �" Nicky (10 yr orange tabby) and Eddie (6 yr black dsh). She enjoys sharing their antics with anyone who wants to listen, other staff or clients

Emergency Care

Your emergency needs can be met right here at our hospital.
VCA Veterinarian Referral Associates provides 24 hour emergency veterinary care, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Emergency veterinarians, veterinary technicians and/or veterinary assistants are on staff 24 hours a day.

We provide the highest standard in veterinary emergency and critical care services. We are trained and equipped to perform a variety of emergency surgeries and procedures. We provide the highest standards of pain management. Emergency internal medicine consultations, including full diagnostics, are available.
