Echocardiography
Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists offers echocardiography as one of our many veterinary cardiology services. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound (sonogram) exam of the heart. Though it is non-invasive, echocardiography allows us to look inside the heart, using sound waves to safely image the heart valves, assess blood flow, determine the cause of heart murmurs and assess the strength and health of the heart muscle and its chambers. These, and other parameters, allow our cardiologist to diagnose and provide appropriate treatment recommendations for diseases of the heart.
Echocardiography and ultrasonography tend to be very well tolerated by most animals and sedation is rarely used. In overweight or double-coated animals, a small area of fur on the chest may be clipped to maximize visualization of the heart.
