Appointments

Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Appointments are required for specialty care visits. If your general practitioner veterinarian has referred your pet to us, the pet is diagnosed and treated, then sent back to your regular veterinarian for any follow up care. Our specialists will work in concert with your regular veterinarian to provide seamless care for your pet. Please note, new patients should arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to their appointment time so that their medical chart can be prepared.

Specialty appointments are scheduled depending on the specialist schedules though no appointments are needed for emergencies or for transfers of animals in critical condition. We have 7 day a week coverage for surgery, internal medicine, oncology, and of course, emergency and critical care.  Please call for an appointment.

If your pet is having an emergency or needs to be seen right away please call us or just walk right in. We are open for emergency 24 hours a day.

Emergency Care

Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists is the only 24-hour emergency hospital in lower Manhattan. We are located at 1 West 15th Street, close to the corner of Fifth Avenue. Our number is 212-924-3311 although if you are having an emergency, you do not have to call before coming in.

Any of the following situations or conditions can be considered an emergency:

  • Traumatic incident such as a fall, a fight with an animal, or any type of car accident
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Ingestion of a foreign object or unknown substance
  • Bleeding, vomiting blood, blood in the feces or urine
  • Swollen, hard abdomen that is painful to the touch
  • Serious wound
  • Non-weight bearing lameness
  • Any injury to the eye
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Inability to move or sudden weakness
  • Unusual or erratic behavior,
  • Signs of extreme pain, such as whining or shaking
  • Straining to urinate (especially a male cat)
  • Labor that does not progress
  • Exposure to extreme heat or cold
  • Non-productive retching and abdominal distention (signs of bloat)
