Thoracocentesis

Sampling of thoracic fluid can be done to aid the diagnosis of the cause of free thoracic fluid (fluid between the lungs and the thoracic cavity, also called pleural effusion. This is an abnormal finding in dogs and cats and can lead to respiratory distress (difficulty breathing). Ultrasound guidance is typically used to aid fluid collection to minimize risks of puncturing the lungs during collection. Possible causes of pleural effusion include chylothorax, blood, infection, heart failure and cancer, among others.
